Las Vegas Blog
The Strip - it's a pretty amazing place to be. Tons of hotels, a million things to do, and Vegas shows galore. However, with so many options to choose from, finding the best Las Vegas show for you can be a bit of a "production." (Pun INTENDED.) On Day 1 of our "Live from Las Vegas" series, we decided to try buying Vegas shows the old-fashioned way - right at the box office.
Here's a summary of what to do - and what not to do - when attempting to buy Vegas show tickets.
- Do Check Out the Discounted Ticket Booths.
While the selection was a bit lackluster (No offense, Donny and Marie/Frank Marino fans ... you know, assuming you're out there.), the show tickets were advertised for as much as 40% off at the discount booths, and the prices were definitely cheaper than the box officer rates themselves. The downside was that the best shows weren't represented (Cirque du Soleil, etc.). The Verdict: Worth checking out, just don't get your hopes up.
- Don't Expect Much on Mondays.
Many of the best shows (Cirque's "O", "LOVE" and "Viva Aria", to name a few.) go dark early in the week. So, if you arrive on Monday, don't expect your pick when it comes to the most popular Vegas shows. That being said, we DID score a $50 ticket (back row, of course) to Jabbawockeez, so we'll tell you how that goes after tonight's show. (Check out all of our reviews of Jabbawockeez.) The Verdict: Arrive on Thursday, or expect lights out on the best Vegas shows.
- Do Get an MLife Card.
We know it's a hassle to sign up for those annoying "membership cards", but this one (affiliated with MGM hotels) appears to have some decent perks, which includes 15- 30% off show tickets and was a big part of the reason we were able to score $50 Jabbawockeez tickets. Attaining the card took less than 10 minutes and was absolutely FREE, so there's really no reason to say 'No' to this Players Club card unless you're in a hurry. (Which you probably aren't because, you know, you're in Las Vegas.) The Verdict: Do it. Seriously.
- Do Shop Around.
OK, so I admit I had my heart set on Cirque's "LOVE" epic and was bitterly disappointed to find out it wouldn't be playing until Thursday. However, it's Vegas, and there are literally DOZENS of other options available. I did my research, and I knew that there were some other potentially great shows showing tonight. ("Peepshow" was in play, as well as Cirque's "KA" and "Zumanity".) Ultimately, you have to go with your gut - and your wallet - which is why Jabbawockeez (by all accounts an unbelievably entertaining show) won out in the end. Just remember that there are always other options out there. The Verdict: If it doesn't feel right, keep moving.
So that's day one of Live from Las Vegas. We'll let you know how the show goes, and be sure to check back in each day this week with updates from the Strip!
