California Hotel and Casino Summary
Features: The California Hotel and Casino Las Vegas is known by those who are familiar with it as "The Cal." Its location in Downtown Las Vegas makes it not only a gateway to Fremont Street, but also a great place to visit to get away from the crowds of the Strip, and participate in a more local and casual environment.
Why We Stay: It's easy to overlook Downtown Las Vegas on any given trip, but everyone should check it out at least once on their Vegas vacation, because they might find a welcome alternative to all the large buildings and high prices of the Strip. When we go Downtown, we go to the California for just this alternative, cheap prices for everything, and a small homey environment.
- The Aloha Spirit: One of the more random things about the California (and one of the things that makes us love it), is that it is known as the "9th Island of Hawaii." The hotel caters to Hawaiians with traditional food from the islands, and a laid-back spirit that has been imported from the Pacific.
- Good and Cheap Eats: The Cal has a number of restaurants that won't be found on any five-star lists, but that do serve quality food for low prices. A few of our favorite items at the California are the Oxtail soup and Prime Rib special.
Inside Knowledge: The California Hotel and Casino Vegas is known for being very loose with comps, even if you're only a medium stakes player. When you're gambling, and if you ask around, there's a pretty good chance that the staff will help you out in getting a comp.
Do's and Don'ts:
- Do Stay in the New Rooms: The Cal has recently remodeled a whole wing of rooms, the beds are comfortable, and the prices are right.
- Don't Order Mixed Drinks: The top-shelf alcohol at the Cal is not the caliber of booze that you'll find on the Strip, so don't expect any super fancy cocktails.
