Early Las Vegas History

Early Las Vegas Nightlife

Las Vegas, from its 1905 beginning, specifically catered to the Saturday Night party mood of adults.
Long known as America's Playground, the knickname of Sin City was derived from the fact that
Las Vegas' isolated desert environment allowed for the abandonment of social restrictions
imposed by most all other towns and cities across the nation.

Prostitution, with its wide-open Wild West gold mining roots, gained a strong foothold in Las Vegas' Block 16.
The 1931 legalization of gambling and six-week divorces helped to perpetuate the adult nature of Las Vegas.
24 hour access to alcohol and assorted nightlife activities have placed Las Vegas in the unique role
of being a full time party town...a place for a never ending Saturday Night.

After the United States victory of World War Two, Americans rode a wave of prosperity unlike any other in
history. The fast-paced growth of the Strip, after 1946, reflected the mood of America and brought a change of
direction for Las Vegas as it became more sophisticated in its nightime tourist offerings. The American public,
with its new, strong desire to let loose of wartime restictions yearned for the very things that Las Vegas
was able to supply, which was unbridled nightime fun and excitement.

From the late Forties through the early Sixties, Las Vegas changed its direction from being a wild frontier
tourist town into becoming a small city able to offer more glamorous tourists attractions. These attractions
came in the form of beautiful hotel rooms, stimulating shows and showrooms, as well as great dining,
cocktail lounges, non-stop gambling and freedom from the more sedate environments found in most Las Vegastowns.
Serving as an American Wedding Capital also necessitated a duty to provide an appropriate environment
of beauty and an atmosphere of romance for honeymooners. Low priced, vacant desert land helped
allow this much needed and distinctly American phenomenon to bloom and spread.

For over 70 years Las Vegas has fulfilled its role in becoming America's adult oriented playground.
This section of our Early Vegas website attempts to chronicle a little of the colorful adult attractions
that became deeply embedded in the history of Las Vegas...a modern day desert oasis...an utterly unique
environment that has provided grown-up fun, romance, luxury, entertainment and excitement to millions.
