Features: The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino Las Vegas opened its doors in 1906 on Fremont Street and has withstood incredible change in Downtown Las Vegas. Despite it's age, the Golden Gate is going strong. In 2008, the Las Vegas Journal Review named it the top-hotel Downtown. With only 106 rooms, the Golden Gate remains a quaint, family-run hotel among resort giants.
Even while the neighboring Golden Nugget upgraded and added a new hotel tower, the rooms at the Golden Gate remain charmingly historic, yet with modern amenities. The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino also has some of the best gaming in Vegas -- after all, they've been doing this for more than a century.
Why We Stay: The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is a legend in Vegas. It's one of the most historic hotels in the city and is going strong after more than 100 years at the helm of Downtown Las Vegas.
- Modern Amenities: The Golden Gate Hotel is not only old, it's relatively small by Las Vegas standards with only 106 simple rooms. But don't let it's age fool you, the rooms are modern with 42-inch flat-screen TV's and iPod docking stations.
- Shrimptastic: The hotel might be shrimpy in size, but it's also credited for serving the first shrimp cocktail in Vegas, and you can carry on that tradition at the Bay City Diner or the San Francisco Shrimp Deli.
- Changeability: The Fremont Street Experience was built right outside the door of the timeless Golden Gate. Step outside and look to the sky for the coolest video and light show in Las Vegas.
Inside Knowledge: There might not be much of a nightlife at the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, but there is a small bar area on the casino floor and one that serves frozen drinks and beer by the entrance. There also aren't any Vegas shows, but a piano player hits the keys everyday from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. near the casino bar. So grab a drink, kick back and let the twinkling piano take you back to 1906.
Do's and Don'ts: Staying Downtown is a lot different than staying on the Las Vegas Strip, and there are a few thing you should take into consideration when making the choice to spend your vacation at the Golden Gate.
- Do Hit the tables: The Golden Gate has $1 roulette tables and $1 chips, and -- like most of the Downtown Casinos-- is popular for its cheap gaming and relaxed casino atmosphere.
- Do Visit the Neon Boneyard: Just north of Downtown on Las Vegas Boulevard is a collection of historic Neon signs from around Vegas, and if you're staying at the most historic hotel, you may as well see a collection of Vegas history as well.
- Don't Expect Strip luxury: Downtown doesn't have the same level of pomp and prestige as the Strip, but it does have character and personality. If you need to be pampered, stay on the Strip, if you want charm, head Downtown.
