A fire broke out Friday 2-25-08 on the roof of the Monte Carlo hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip and quickly spread, engulfing the resort’s top floors. Luckily no injuries are being reported.
Flaming embers fell to the street below.
The three-alarm fire, which began just before 11 a.m., was spreading from the center section of the hotel across the roof line. Flames and plumes of black smoke could be seen on what appeared to a west-facing rooftop of the resort.
“The building is being evacuated,” said Gordon Absher, spokesman for the hotel owner, MGM Mirage Inc. He said he had no immediate information whether anyone was hurt in the fire.
It is being reported that welders were working on the roof at the time of the fire.
The Monte Carlo Resort & Casino has more than 3,000 guest rooms and opened in June 1996.
The 32-story casino-hotel modeled after the Place du Casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco, was a joint venture between Steve Wynn’s Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises.

This industry tradeshow, open to participants in the CE industry, runs January 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and Sands Expo and Convention Center/The Venetian.
In CE product terms the event has been dominated by a return of the size wars. A number of leading manufacturers are exhibiting new TV sets that are all defined with the superlative. Appropriately enough, in a town as outlandish as Las Vegas, there is no such thing as average here: all of the major announcements seem to be the “biggest”.
Amid the noise of innovation and celebration you can detect a note of caution. The Consumer Electronics Association is projecting growth of some six per cent in the sector in 2008, yet there seems to be some general worries that the effects of the credit crunch will be felt in consumer spending patterns on electronics.
This is Vegas though, and optimism is the order of the day.
CES organizers said the show would be back next year but said they were planning to pursue new, less expensive arrangements.

LAS VEGAS – In 2003, she began her show with a burst of fireworks and on Saturday night she ended it in a cascade of rose petals.
She is unquestionably one of the most successful entertainers in the world today, capable of grossing over $400 million (U.S.) during her 717-performance run of A New Day at the 4,100-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace – a figure no one has equaled before and some say no one will ever equal again.

6 students were shot Tuesday afternoon in a northeast Las Vegas as they were leaving there high school bus. Authorities say at least 1 person was critically injured in the shooting, which happened a few blocks away from 2 elementary schools.
Officer Bill Cassell said the police gang unit is investigating, though it is not clear at this point whether gangs were involved.
“They were just like sitting ducks as soon as the bus pulled away - bam bam bam - they start getting shot like that,” says Elaine Budesa, an eyewitness.
The victims do not appear to have been random targets, according to Deputy police chief Marc Joseph, who says the gunmen appear to have been “waiting for certain individuals on the bus.”
Police are not saying whether the attackers were on foot or in a vehicle, but at least two people are believed to have taken part.

Earlier this week the FBI raided magician David Copperfield’s and seized a digital camera system, computer hard drive, and nearly $2 million in cash, according to a local television station.
There was an investigation in Las Vegas and that investigators had been in contact with David Copperfield, but have not released any more details. That’s according to his lawyer and FBI spokespeople.
FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs said there was investigative activity Wednesday during the day and evening and said it was related to a pending Seattle case.
Copperfield warehouse, the International Museum & Library of the Conjuring Arts, is used to store illusions and magic memorabilia from around the world. The raid was reported by local station KLAS-TV.
David has been a longtime performer at the Hollywood Theater at the MGM Grand casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, where he has performed in 6 to 8 week stints several times a year.
Copperfield’s attorney, David Chesnoff, confirmed only that his client had been contacted by investigators.
“We understand there is an investigation, are in touch with the investigators, and are respecting the confidentiality of the investigation,” he said.
