Pros:
Room relatively clean on the surface, looks like a castle, Dicks Last Resort.
Cons:
Thick, smokey air, dirty room just below surface, heisted luggage, bad parking, worse food.

When we pulled into the parking lot, it was nearly impossible to figure out where to pull up if you didn't want valet. (We never do). When I tried to get a luggage cart, the baggage attendant said "It's ok, I'll get it for you", but he took the baggage away claiming he'd bring it right up for us. 45 minutes after wife called for luggage, It arrived but nearly 20 minutes after the time stated it had left the baggage area.
When I asked about the refrigerator that was supposed to come with the room. The polite employee informed me that they had to be requested, and that it was $20 more per day. Rather steep for an old, worn looking $100 refrigerator. He was kind enough to waive the fee, however. The advertised coffee maker was apparently not really included either. Along with a bath mat, or a place to hang a towel within reach of the shower. This is also the most expensive hotel I have EVER stayed at that didn't include wireless internet access. You can hard wire up to a LAN line for $12.99 a day, or we found wi-fi in the neighborhood of $7 an HOUR! I can't recall EVER having a hotel ask for money for it. Usually they either offer it free, or not at all.
A call to the front desk confirmed that they did not offer coffee makers or microwaves. Motel 6 usually has coffee makers, and I don't remember paying more than $60 for a room without a microwave before. The bathroom was otherwise nice enough, but a shower/tub combo would have been easier to bathe the four year old. Speaking of the kids, it was impossible to get ANYWHERE in or around the entire building without walking through what has to be the smokiest casino I've ever encountered. Since there is no escaping these areas, we would have really preferred they up the ventilation a bit. The arcade area was a lot better, with "No smoking" signs posted prominently, there was a lot LESS smoking down there. Too bad that only one change machine could be found in a back corner that worked. Made it much harder to let the kids play. Saved a bit on video games, though.
Got back to the room around 12:30, to find that housekeeping had not been there. A call to housekeeping was met with a snippy employee who said they'd be up, "Straight away". They eventually came after I left. They must have missed the plastic ice bucket full of water outside of our door. It was there when we checked in, and I tripped over it the next night, accidentally spilling water all over the hallway carpet. It disappeared the next day.
During our stay we tried both their buffet and Cafe. I didn't know it was possible to master mediocrity quite so well. The food at the buffet was difficult to eat, and would have been considered pricy for the selection even if it had been prepared well. I was pleased at how cheerfully the busser was to clean my table of the food remaining on it after the hostess seated us. Apparrently, the 2nd time was the charm.
Sherwood Forest Cafe proved that even breakfast can be done poorly, as my "Spicy" something-or-other omellete was about as flavorful as plain scrambled eggs, but for the fact that it was topped with a salsa that tasted like catsup with pre-cooked onions stirred into it. At least it gave me something to ponder while walking halfway across the smokey casino with the kids looking for the bathroom, as there wasn't one in or near the cafe. When I tried to pay with my Visa, the employee insisted I either sign the back, or write the words "Check ID" on the back with her sharpie. She explained that the management was very strict about this, so she could not accept my card without one or the other. I finally complied. The next employee I handed it to didn't even look at the back of the card less than 10 minutes later, or ask for ID.
We did enjoy the "Tournament of Kings" Dinner show, even though it was a blatant Medeval Times imitation. The authenticity was even replicated in the food, proven by how authentically the Cornish Game Hens were prepared. I don't think anyone has been able to make them quite that dry in centuries! They could only offer soda for the kids to drink, because apparently milk and juices were not yet invented in the era they were depicting. When we noticed kids in another waiters area drinking milk, I was able to verbally wrestle our waiter into doing the same. He returned about 15 minutes later with ONE milk in a styrofoam cup. For over $61 per person, including our 4 year old, we would have also liked a restroom there as well instead of having to leave and wander the arcade looking for it during the meal. Children 3 and under are allowed to sit on a parents lap and share their meal, all others pay full price. No discount offered for guests of the hotel.
"Dick's Last resort" was not bad. This is a franchise where the main hook is that the service is poor and the help is blatantly rude. I believe the Excalibur found themselves the perfect proprietors, as this is there specialty anyway. The food wasn't bad, and I'd go there again, the only reason I would enter the Excalibur again.
In short, there are only 2 reasons I can think of to enter the Excalibur:
1: Dicks Last Resort. This is the only one for hundreds of miles, and the experience is one not to miss.
2: You're a smoker, you're already in Vegas, on that end of the strip, and you're out of cigarettes. And money.

Our family found Excalibur to be perfect. Reasonable rates, good room, wide selection of foods, pool, arcade, friendly and helpful staff. I didn't see the medieval jesters, jugglers, etc but that's OK. Great location for viewing the strip and good shopping in the resort and nearby. Four Stars!
