Hoover Dam Tour Review

Hoover Dam is about a 45 minute drive off of the strip East toward Arizona.  Getting there is extremely easy and I highly recommend stopping in Boulder City on the way to or from Hoover Dam.  Once at the dam you will notice quite a lot of people just milling around gazing in wonder at the sheer enormity of the structure that holds back all of Lake Mead and the Colorado River.  The majority of these people will stand around for a while then get back in their cars and head back to the strip or on to wherever they were headed.  These people haven't even seen half of the dam.  If you go to the Hoover Dam, do yourself a favor and take the tour.  It takes about 2-hours to see the entire dam including a short film and some self guided exhibits.  There are actually two different tours available.  One tour is $11 and the other is $30.  The only difference between these two tours is that the $30 tour includes a guided look at the inspection passageways within the dam itself that they use on a daily basis to continually monitor the condition of the dam.  I took the longer $30 tour and I would say that most people would probably be satisfied with the $11 version unless you are an architect or structural engineer.  Both tours include an elevator trip down to the bottom of the dam for a short walk through the bedrock of the canyon to a viewing platform in the powerplant where you can see the massive generators that supply electricity for 3 states.  Some of the generators may or may not be running depending on the electricity needs of the region at the time.  I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the lives of the workers that built the dam as well as the necessary innovations in construction and design that made the project possible.  If you've grown tired of the lights of the strip and the endless chiming of the slot machines, take the Dam tour.  The "Dam" puns alone make it worth the trip.

Summary

Features: Located 35 miles outside of Las Vegas in Boulder City, Nevada, the Hoover Dam is a phenomenal architectural achievement. Known world-wide, this 726-foot-tall hydroelectric station sits on the Colorado River creating the Lake Mead reservior.

Why We Go: As one of the top 10 construction achievements of the 20th century, Hoover Dam is a phenominal landmark to behold. Situated in miles of majestic canyons, colorful rock formations and pristine waters, the beauty of the terrain and the grandeur of this concrete structure is more then enough reason to leave Las Vegas for an afternoon adventure.

  • The History: Those history buffs out there will be fascinated to learn about the political and economic decisions that went in to the making of the Hoover Dam in the 1930's.
  • Be in Two Places at Once: The Hoover Dam is situated on border of Nevada and Arizona, giving tourists the opportunity to literally straddle the stateline. Don't miss Hoover Dam's large clocks letting you know the two time zones you're in.

Inside Knowledge: More than one million tourists each year visit the Hoover Dam.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Do Leave Early: The traffic can get backed up pretty bad close to the Hoover Dam when the highway becomes one lane each way. Beat the traffic by leaving Las Vegas a little early. Around 9am the roads will be smooth sailing.
  • Don't Go During Peak Summer Season: The summer temperatures in the Mojave desert can reach 115 degrees easily and with all that concrete absorbing the heat, the surface of the Hoover Dam could pratically melt your sneakers. We recommend saving this tourist attraction for a Vegas trip during the spring or fall.
